Overview
The Boatyard Distillery, nestled on the picturesque banks of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, holds the distinction of being Fermanagh's first legal distillery since 1890. The journey began in 2013 when Joe, the visionary behind Boatyard, envisioned returning to his hometown of Enniskillen. His inspiration took root in the rich distilling culture of Edinburgh, where a multitude of Scottish distilleries fuelled his dream of creating something extraordinary back home.
Joe's decade-long tenure at The Glenmorangie Company provided him with invaluable experience and fine-tuned his skills, laying the groundwork for his ambitious plans. His goal was not just to craft any gin but to produce one that would redefine the Martini experience globally, earning its place in the world's most distinguished bars and restaurants.
The pivotal moment arrived in late 2016 when The Boatyard Distillery achieved a significant milestone by selling its first bottle at a local festival. Notably, Boatyard also secured an early win with the prestigious American Bar at The Savoy, then recognised as the World's Best Bar, becoming the first to stock Boatyard outside of Ireland.
From the initial vision of crafting a gin tailored for Martinis, boasting a robust juniper profile suitable for classic G&Ts, Boatyard has grown to attract top industry professionals. Today, it stands proudly in the hands of the world's finest bartenders, gracing retail shelves globally.
Beyond its commitment to crafting exceptional spirits, Boatyard is dedicated to sustainability. Joe and his team have set their sights on becoming the leading Irish gin distillery with a focus on environmentally conscious practices. This commitment was underscored by Boatyard's achievement in February 2023, becoming the first B Corp certified distillery in Ireland.
Joe McGirr's unwavering passion, honed expertise, and commitment to excellence have not only shaped Boatyard into a global brand but have also positioned it as a trailblazer in the world of Irish gin, setting new standards for sustainable spirits.
